Kokle Music Concert: Venation

The paths of venation can be seen on your palm, the bark of a tree, the lines of a leaf and the pattern of a folk costume belt. They are the unfathomable twists and turns of life and the fate which allows us to meet with each other, ourselves, music, and traditions.

We open our palms to read the future, but the hands of kokle players contain so much more: they contain music. Only the touch of a true, responsive, energetic hand can pull the most vivid sound palette out of the strings of the instrument. Full of stories, feelings, memories and dreams: everything which is so characteristic of a young person who knows that everything is in their hands!

The many-layered concert repertoire will gently take the listener by the hand to lead them along colourful roads and paths brought to life by the kokle players’ hands. It coaxes jolly folk dances and soulful melodies, contemporary ballads and gentle lullabies out of the strings.

The kokle player is a modern Latvian symbol. They give one hand out to tradition, holding closely onto it like a mother’s voice over the cradle, supporting and guiding, while the other hand boldly stretches into the future, searching for their individuality in the complex venation of life’s paths.

When one kokle player’s hand touches a string, it is a sound; when four hundred pairs of hands touch their strings, it is a miracle.

Concert in two parts with an intermission.
